What happens at the on-site measurement

Why the tape measure comes out after the cabinets are set, what we record, and what we confirm with you before anything is cut.

Short answer

What is an on-site measurement?

It is the visit where we record your room exactly as it was built, rather than as it was drawn. Everything cut afterwards — slab layout, seam positions, cut-outs, edge profiles — comes from those measurements, which is why it happens after the cabinets are installed and level.

Why it happens after the cabinets are set

Drawings describe intent. A finished room has its own dimensions: walls are rarely perfectly square, cabinet runs settle, and appliance openings end up a few millimeters from where the plan said. Measuring the built room instead of the plan is the difference between a countertop that meets the wall cleanly and one that leaves a gap somebody has to fill with caulk.

It also means the cabinets need to be in place and level before we come. If they are still moving, the measurements move with them.

What we record

  1. The true run of every wall the surface meets, including how far out of square it sits
  2. Cabinet heights and levels across each run
  3. Sink and cooktop openings, taken from the actual units where possible
  4. Faucet and accessory hole positions
  5. Overhang depths, and support where an overhang needs it
  6. Where seams can fall, given the slab size and the room

What we confirm with you

Some decisions are easier to make standing in the room than reading them on a page, so we settle them while we are there.

Decided on site

  • Edge profile, seen against your cabinets rather than on a sample board
  • Where seams will land, and which are unavoidable
  • How the veining is laid out across the run, for natural stone
  • Backsplash height, if there is one
  • Sink placement and how it meets the surface

After the measurement

The confirmed measurements become the cut. Nothing is fabricated from an estimate, which is also why we do not quote a final figure before this visit: until the room has been measured, any number is a guess dressed up as a price.

When countertops and cabinets are both part of the project, the stone stage is coordinated with the cabinetry so there is one measure and one install, rather than two contractors working from two sets of numbers.

Keep exploring

How long does the measurement take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the room. A single straight run is quick; a kitchen with an island, a peninsula and a separate bar takes longer, mostly because there is more to confirm with you.
Do I need to be there?
It helps. Several decisions — edge profile, seam placement, how veining runs — are much easier to make together, in the room, than over email afterwards.
Can you measure before the cabinets are installed?
We can visit earlier to plan, but the measurements that drive fabrication are taken once the cabinets are set and level. Cutting from anything else risks a surface that does not fit the room as built.
